1. Power line Network Simulation

Home Networking has taken on more and more importance as the need grows to interconnect multiple computers and other digital information sources and within the home. The major contenders in this application area is wireless networking, led by the 802.11x standard and  power line networking, let by the HomePlug Powerline Alliance standard. Our current research suggests that Powerline networking currently available at speeds of 10Mbps provides almost complete network coverage for typical home over exisiting electrical wiring, while wireless solutions would require multiple Wireless Access Points (WAPs) interconnected by wired infrastrucure for the same coverage. An interesting possibility which would be of significant value in Powerline and wireless solutions is that each network node would be configurable as a router to relay traffic to provide greater coverage.

We are using OPNET to conduct various simulation studies of wireless and powerline networks. This modeling and simulation effort will be used to analyze and verify the quality of service (QoS) and overall throughput of power line and wireless home networks.
